Student Life Diversity Council
Mission of the Student Life Diversity Council
The Student Life Diversity Council is dedicated to creating a community in which students, faculty, staff, and community members value the rich diversity each person contributes to our campus and the world.
Grants Overview
The Student Life Diversity Council's Diversity Enhancement Grants program has been discontinued effective July 1, 2005. With multiple unfunded priorities, the Office of Student Life has decided to shift funds from the grants program to the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), funding it permanently rather than on cash. NCBI is a nationally recognized prejudice reduction and community building training program. Evaluations from OSU students, faculty, and staff who have participated in the program demonstrate that it has significant impact in increasing awareness of and respect for others. Fully funding the NCBI program is possible now that student organizations have access to more programming monies because of the student activity fee.
The Diversity Enhancement Grants program was started by Vice President Hall a few years ago in response to the limited funds available for students and student organizations to plan their own diversity projects. Since then a student activity fee has been created, more than tripling the amount of monies available to student organizations for campus programs. In addition, the grants program was created to fund true student-initiated events. Recently the percentage of programs that are staff-initiated with heavy student involvement has increased significantly, moving the grants program away from its original intent. With the decline in student-initiated requests for grants monies and the increase in demand for NCBI workshops, the decision was made to redirect these funds.
We hope that you will continue to promote and celebrate diversity on campus and encourage you to seek alternate sources of funding in order to do so. Please bear in mind that these funds will not be available next year as you plan your goals for 2005-06. Registered student organizations can apply for student activity funds through the Council on Student Affairs (See web site for more information).
